Current industrial solvents often perform well but currently do not meet modern health, safety, and sustainability standards. This seminar focuses on designing novel solvents by mixing tuneable ionic and molecular solids, requiring specific thermodynamic ingredients. These ingredients were obtained by melting the unmeltable and exploring routes to chemically alter the balance between enthalpy and entropy. These macroscopic mixing properties were then related to the molecular picture from simulations, unveiling that liquid and solid disorder are vital for predicting the formation of new liquid solvents from solid components.
