Divided matter department

The divided matter departement deals with systems having one phase dispersed into another one.

Granular materials and porous media are example of divided matter. They exhibit a rich dynamics and it is not easy to perform numerical simulations on such materials. These complex systems are ubiquitous in nature and in industrial settings. The numerous application in geophysics, environmental and engineer science are led us to develop an interdisciplinary research in close collaboration with these disciplines, in particular inside the Observatoire des Sciences de l’Univers de Rennes (OSUR)

Destabilisation and plasticity of granular media

This line of research aims to better understand and model the phenomena of movement of granular media under the effect of a constraint (shear, pressure, vibration) and the possible link with the variation of compactness of the medium (dilatancy or decompaction)

We study the motion of grains under the action of gravity or under shear by a liquid or by the air

In this axe we want to better understand transport of particles, liquid films as well as heat transfer in porous media.
